The Street-Smart Gun Book

Endless volumes have been written through the ages on the subject of the criminal mind. Indeed, there is no shortage of theories in the areas of crime and criminal behavior, but even today, no one really understands why certain people are so precipitously wicked. So difficult are criminals to understand, and so unpleasant are they and their acts to contemplate, that decent people tend to downplay their existence.

Most of us want desperately to believe that sociopaths will somehow magically be prevented from touching us or our world. However, this is precisely the sort of self-deception that mature people must avoid. Some saintly individuals may be able to count on divine protection, but the rest of us must provide our own!

It takes a prudent person to look evil squarely in the face, accept it, then make reasonable preparations to avoid or abrogate it. Those who choose to stick their heads in the sand, do so at their peril.

If you are resolved to confront the perils of this present world squarely and honestly and are convinced that legitimate self-defense is not only your right but also your responsibility; you will find what follows to be instructive, enlightening, and important.

Excerpt from the chapter, "Preparing the Mind:"

In this society, there are people who prey upon other people. That is, some people will, on occasion, in obvious and contemptuous defiance of the law, physically attack other people in such a way that serious bodily injury or death are the likely result. Like auto accidents, such attacks are not a daily occurrence for most of us, but they do happen; and when they do, the results are often appalling and always irrevocable.

Perhaps one person in a thousand will, under certain circumstances, initiate a precipitous and unjustified violent attack upon another for reasons which, at the time, are apparently sufficient for him.

It is not germane to squabble over the mathematics. Granted, the chance of anyone being attacked at any particular moment are usually very remote, however to the person actually being attacked, the probability is real enough! When the question is naively asked, how often are people really killed around here?, the correct answer is, Only once!

Anyone who is even marginally cognizant of the world and times in which we live knows that the peril of physical assault does exist, and that it exists to some degree in every place and at every moment. Furthermore, we cannot always rely upon the police, whose basic function is one of reaction as opposed to pro-action, to protect us.

It is essential that you think in advance about a situation where you may be compelled to use force in order to save your life. You must be well-acquainted with all your options and must have mentally and physically rehearsed the more viable ones.
